Shortly after we bought our first home, the refrigerator kept blowing the fuse. This isn’t just a matter of technical tidiness. That old forgotten duct taped wiring wasn\u2019t just messy, it was a potential fire hazard. The goal of a Coverage Scan is to \u201cmove the fridge\u201d and go from an assumed inventory of what you have to an actual one. And almost every time in our experience, the actual inventory contains surprises. The digital equivalent of finding a duct taped spiderweb of electrical horror.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rogue and Piggybacking Tags<\/b><\/p>\n

A <\/span>rogue tag<\/span><\/a> is any script executing on your site that isn’t deployed through your tag management system. It might have been hardcoded onto a page by a developer for a quick test and forgotten, or maybe it was added by a content management plugin. Piggybacking is when an approved tag (say, from an advertising partner) decides to load an unapproved tag along with it. Your guest brought a friend you didn’t invite, and now that friend is going through your medicine cabinet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that analytics tool a developer you never met tried out two years ago? The one they canceled after 90 days when they got busy? No, your tag manager only shows the scripts that are <\/span>supposed<\/b> to be there. It has no visibility into hardcoded tags, piggybacking scripts, or anything loaded outside of its control, which are the primary sources of risk a coverage scan uncovers.<\/span><\/p>\n

How often should we run a coverage scan?<\/b><\/p>\n

You should perform a comprehensive initial scan to establish a baseline, and then at minimum it should be followed by quarterly scans to catch any drift. It\u2019s also essential to run a scan before and after any major site changes, platform migrations, or redesigns. If you you have multiple teams, and agencies, constantly making changes and updates to their systems, and your website, you may even want to have a daily coverage scan to prevent any exposure from lingering long enough for a regulator to find.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can’t we just do this manually?<\/b><\/p>\n

Not effectively at scale. A manual check of a few key pages will miss thousands of potential issues hidden in complex user journeys, on dynamic pages, or within third-party scripts. Does a coverage scan find all PII leakage?<\/b><\/p>\n

A coverage scan identifies all the potential sources of leakage by creating a complete inventory of every third-party script. It tells you <\/span>who<\/b> your site is talking to.
